This year our Coaching Academy hosted Sports Academy George to Laurelhill Community College and what a day it was! The PE department had already held several fundraising events throughout the summer term to help with the costs of Sports Academy George’s trip. After months of preparation there was a lot of excitement amongst staff and students as we finally welcomed the team to college. Even though the weather was dismal it didn’t dampen the spirits at Laurelhill. Sixteen pupils from Sports Academy George in South Africa visited in total for a special football match and assembly.
Mr Watson, Head of PE, had been anxiously watching the weather forecast all week, hoping that the weather would not call off the match and thankfully it did not. The day started with an assembly, the highlight of which was the George Academy pupils singing and dancing for us in their language. The 6th Form Coaching Academy students even managed to get up and join in. After the assembly, it was time for the match. Laurelhill player Ryan Dawson scored to make it 1-0 in the 1st half of the match. However, the wind really started to blow in the 2nd half and with 5 minutes to go, the boys from South Africa scored. The match ended 1-1 which was a great result for both schools.
After the match, students enjoyed lunch together and some recreational activities where they bonded over their love of football. Overall it was a very enjoyable and memorable day for both schools and we look forward to welcoming Sports Academy George again in the future.
